How to choose wheel nuts – 4 parameters
It must match the studs in the hub, e.g. M12x1,5 or M14x1,5. You can check the thread in your car's manual, on the old nut or in our car-based fitment finder.
60° cone, ball or flat washer. The shape of the nut must match the seat in the wheel – for example, original alloy wheels on many Japanese cars require nuts with a flat washer, while aftermarket wheels most often need a conical seat.
Most often 17, 19 or 21 mm. For wheels with narrow bolt holes, choose a nut with a smaller head so that the socket fits.
A closed nut protects the end of the stud from water and salt and looks better. An open nut works well with longer studs, e.g. after fitting wheel spacers.
The most popular wheel nut threads
| Thread | Example car makes |
|---|---|
| M12x1,5 | Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Mitsubishi |
| M12x1,25 | Nissan, Suzuki, Subaru, Infiniti |
| M14x1,5 | Jeep, Dodge, RAM, Tesla, Land Rover, some SUVs |
The thread and seat depend on the model, year and type of wheel. You can check the exact specifications in the car-based fitment finder.

Fitting wheel nuts – what to remember
- Clean the studs, the hub and the seats in the wheel.
- Thread the nuts on by hand, then tighten them with a torque wrench in a criss-cross pattern to the torque given in the car's manual.
- Do not lubricate the threads or seats unless the car manufacturer recommends it.
- Check the wheel tightness again after 50–100 km.
- Damaged or too short a stud? See wheel studs.
Questions about wheel nuts
How can I check which nuts fit my car?
Use the car-based fitment finder – select the make, model, generation and wheel type, and we will show you the thread, seat and matching nuts. You can also send us the OEM number of your old nut.
Do alloy wheels need different nuts than steel wheels?
Often they do. Alloy wheels have a different seat than steel ones (e.g. a flat washer or a cone instead of a different shape), so when changing wheels, check that the nuts fit the new seat.
What is the difference between a closed and an open nut?
A closed nut has a covered end – it protects the stud thread from water, salt and dirt. An open nut lets the stud protrude through the nut, which is useful with longer studs.
What wrench size do wheel nuts have?
Most often 17, 19 or 21 mm – depending on the car make and the nut. We state the size in the description of each product.
What does TÜV certification on nuts mean?
It means the product has been tested by the independent certification body TÜV. Ellis and Bimecc nuts available in our shop carry this certificate. KLUCWERK nuts are produced under an ISO-certified quality system.
Which brands of wheel nuts do you offer?
Ellis Engineering and Bimecc Engineering (TÜV certified) and our own brand KLUCWERK (ISO certified).
