How to choose wheel bolts – 4 parameters
The diameter and pitch of the thread must match the hub, e.g. M12x1,5 or M14x1,5. You can read the thread from the marking in your car's manual, from the old bolt or in our car-based fitment finder.
60° cone, ball (R12, R13, R14) or flat washer. The shape of the head must match the seat in the wheel – original wheels often require a ball seat, aftermarket wheels most often a cone.
Measured from the end of the seat under the head to the end of the thread. The thread should engage the hub for at least a length equal to its diameter (M14 → min. 14 mm), ideally the same as the original bolt.
Most often 17 mm or 19 mm. It matters for wheels with narrow bolt holes – in that case, bolts with a smaller head or a tapered head come in handy.
The most popular wheel bolt threads
| Thread | Example car makes |
|---|---|
| M12x1,5 | Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat (older models), Opel, Renault, older BMW and Mercedes |
| M14x1,5 | Newer Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Opel |
| M12x1,25 | Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo |
| M14x1,25 | BMW (newer models), Mini |
The thread depends on the model, year and type of wheel. You can check the exact specifications in the car-based fitment finder.
Brands we trust
Italian manufacturer of wheel bolts and nuts. Precise thread and high corrosion resistance – according to the manufacturer, the bolts pass a salt spray test of up to 720 hours. TÜV certified.
Italian quality proven by workshops across Europe. Bolts compliant with European standards, TÜV certified – a solid choice for alloy and steel wheels.
Fitting wheel bolts – what to remember
- Clean the hub and the seats in the wheel of rust and dirt.
- Thread the bolts in by hand, then tighten them with a torque wrench in a criss-cross pattern to the torque given in the car's manual.
- Do not lubricate the threads or seats unless the car manufacturer recommends it.
- Check the wheel tightness again after 50–100 km.
- When fitting bolt-through spacers, the bolt must be longer by the thickness of the spacer – see the guide how to choose wheel spacers.
Questions about wheel bolts
How can I check which bolts fit my car?
Use the car-based fitment finder – select the make, model, generation and wheel type, and we will show you the thread, seat and matching bolts. You can also send us the OEM number of your old bolt.
Do aftermarket wheels need different bolts than original ones?
Often they do. Original wheels of many makes (e.g. VW, Audi, Mercedes) have a spherical seat, while aftermarket wheels most often have a 60° conical one. A bolt with the wrong seat will not clamp the wheel properly.
What is the difference between a ball-seat bolt and a cone-seat bolt?
The shape of the surface that presses against the wheel: a cone has a 60° angle, while a ball seat is rounded with a radius of R12, R13 or R14. The shape must match the seat in the wheel.
What strength class is required?
Bolts of strength class 10.9 are used for passenger car wheels – these are the ones we recommend and sell.
What does TÜV certification on bolts mean?
It means the product has been tested by the independent certification body TÜV. Ellis and Bimecc bolts available in our shop carry this certificate.
